Cognitive Processing Therapy
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed to help people recover from trauma, especially post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In CPT, clients work with a therapist to identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and beliefs related to their traumatic experiences. The goal is to help them reframe these thoughts, reduce distress, and regain a sense of control over their lives.
For clients, CPT usually involves weekly sessions where they talk through their experiences, complete short writing or thought-record exercises, and practice applying new ways of thinking to everyday situations. They learn to notice patterns in their thoughts and emotions, challenge unhelpful beliefs, and develop healthier ways of understanding themselves and their experiences. Over time, clients often notice a reduction in anxiety, guilt, and intrusive memories, along with improved mood, confidence, and ability to cope with triggers. |
