The Language of Play: Supporting Children Through Play Therapy at RCC

Children do not always have the words to explain what they are feeling. Stress, anxiety, grief, behavioral challenges, trauma, family transitions, and overwhelming emotions often show up through play, behavior, body language, or changes at home and school long before a child can clearly talk about them.

That is where play therapy comes in.

We are excited to announce that play therapy services are now being offered at Restorative Connections!

What Is Play Therapy?
Play therapy is an evidence-based approach designed specifically for children. Through carefully selected toys, creative activities, games, storytelling, art, and imaginative play, children are able to safely express emotions, process experiences, and build healthier coping skills.
For children, play is communication. In the same way adults use conversation to process emotions and experiences, children often use play to work through their inner world.

A trained play therapist helps create a safe, supportive environment where children can:
  • Express feelings they may not yet have words for
  • Improve emotional regulation
  • Increase confidence and self-esteem
  • Develop healthy coping skills
  • Strengthen attachment and relationships
  • Process trauma, grief, or stressful life events
  • Reduce anxiety and behavioral concerns

Who Can Benefit From Play Therapy?
Play therapy can support children experiencing:
  • Anxiety or excessive worry
  • Trauma or difficult life experiences
  • Divorce or family transitions
  • Emotional outbursts or behavioral challenges
  • School-related stress
  • Grief and loss
  • Social difficulties
  • ADHD-related challenges
  • Low self-esteem
  • Medical stress or chronic illness
  • Foster care or adoption transitions
It can also be incredibly helpful for children who seem “fine” on the surface but are struggling internally in ways that are difficult to express.

What Does a Session Look Like?
Play therapy sessions are intentional and therapeutic, even though they may appear simple from the outside. Sessions may include:
  • Pretend play
  • Sand tray therapy
  • Art and creative expression
  • Games
  • Puppets and storytelling
  • Movement-based activities
  • Emotional identification and coping skill practice
The therapist carefully observes themes, emotional patterns, and behaviors while helping the child feel safe, understood, and supported.
Parents and caregivers are also an important part of the process. Therapy often includes collaboration, support, and guidance to help strengthen connection and emotional safety at home.

At Restorative Connections, we believe healing happens in safe, authentic relationships. Children deserve developmentally appropriate support that honors where they are emotionally and neurologically.

If you have questions about whether play therapy may be a good fit, reach out to learn more or schedule an appointment.
Healing and growth often begin when children are given a safe space to be seen, understood, and supported — exactly as they are.
